FAQs

Find clear answers about The Small Elephant, The Elephant Path Community, membership, privacy, support options, and what to expect as you get started.

  • What is The Small Elephant?

The Small Elephant is a support ecosystem for families navigating neurodivergence. Through practical tools like the Luma Timer, community, live conversations, trusted guidance, and shared lived experience, we help make everyday challenges more manageable while helping parents feel less alone, more supported, and clearer about what comes next.

Our goal isn't to add one more thing to your plate—it's to help make the load feel lighter.

  • Why is it called The Small Elephant?

The name comes from the story of a baby elephant that grows into adulthood believing it cannot break a chain that no longer has the strength to hold it.

Neurodivergent families can encounter countless limitations of their own—some real, some temporary, and some rooted in assumptions made too early about what is possible.

At The Small Elephant, we believe in meeting today's reality with honesty and support, while refusing to confuse today's observation with tomorrow's potential.

  • Who is The Small Elephant ecosystem for?

The Small Elephant welcomes parents and caregivers raising neurodivergent children and families navigating:

    Autism

    ADHD and AuDHD

    Sensory processing differences

    Auditory processing differences

    Executive functioning challenges

    Emotional regulation differences

    Developmental delays

    Anxiety

    Learning differences

    Questions without answers—yet

You do not need a formal diagnosis to belong here. If your family could benefit from practical tools, trusted guidance, meaningful community, or simply a place where you feel understood, you're welcome.

  • Does my child need a formal diagnosis?

No. Many families know something feels difficult long before a diagnosis exists. Support is not limited to formal labels.

  • Is this only for parents of young children?

No. While many members have younger children, the emotional challenges of raising a neurodivergent child don't disappear with age. Parents of teens, young adults, and children at every stage are welcome.

  • Is this only for autism?

Not at all. Every neurodiverse family looks different. Some children have multiple diagnoses, some have none, and many families are still figuring things out. The Small Elephant exists to support the parents and caregivers navigating it all—not a diagnosis.

  • What is The Small Elephant Parent Community?

The Small Elephant Parent Community is a private membership for parents raising neurodiverse children—a thoughtfully curated space to connect with parents who understand, ask the questions you're carrying, share what you've learned, and find helpful resources and connection along the way.

Rather than another noisy social media group, it's a smaller, more intentional community built around privacy, meaningful conversation, and deliberate connection—so you can find your people without having to search through all the noise.

  • What happens inside the community?

Think of it as a private social space built specifically for parents raising neurodiverse children—organized around the things you're actually trying to understand, navigate, and find support for.

    Inside, members can:

    • Ask questions, start conversations, and share what they're navigating
    • Connect with parents who understand the realities behind the questions
    • Find conversations and resources around school, therapies, regulation, routines, relationships, financial help, and more
    • Share recommendations, resources, and lived experience
    • Celebrate the little victories—and have somewhere to go on the hard days
    • Connect through the member directory, member-led conversations, virtual calls, and in-person gatherings

The Small Elephant thoughtfully creates and cares for the space, while members bring the community to life. This is a place to use, contribute to, and make your own—a more private, intentional way to find your people without navigating the noise of public social media.

  • Is participation required?

No. Some members post and connect often. Others prefer to read, browse resources, or simply spend some time getting a feel for the community before joining in.

There’s no expectation to share before you feel comfortable. You’re welcome to participate in whatever way works for you.

  • Is this a Facebook group?

No. The community is hosted in a private, thoughtfully curated member space designed to reduce distractions, protect privacy, and make it easier to find the conversations, resources, and people you're looking for.

  • Is my privacy protected?

Privacy is a priority here. The community is intentionally private because we know many parents don't feel comfortable discussing their families in public spaces.

Members are expected to respect one another's privacy, keep personal stories shared within the community private, and help maintain a respectful environment.

We also ask everyone to be thoughtful about what they choose to share about themselves and their families.

While we can't guarantee the actions of individual members, protecting the privacy and trust of this community is something we take seriously.

  • What makes this different from parenting groups online?

    Privacy, curation, and intentional connection.

The Small Elephant is designed to make it easier to find the conversations, resources, and people relevant to what you're actually navigating—without searching through the noise of a large public feed.

You don't have to know exactly what you're looking for when you arrive. Start with where you are, and find your way from there.

  • Will people actually understand what we’re going through?

That is one of the core reasons this community exists.

Every family’s experience is different, but this is a space built around shared lived experience—where you’re more likely to meet parents who understand the context behind the question, without needing every part of it explained first.

You may not find someone whose story looks exactly like yours. But you may find someone who recognizes a piece of it.

  • What if I already feel overwhelmed and stretched thin?

Then you don't need another thing asking more of you.

The community is designed to be something you can use when and how you need it—ask a question, look for a resource, connect with another parent, or simply read for a while.

There’s no expectation to keep up, participate regularly, or do anything with what you find here. Start with where you are.

  • Is this practical support or emotional support?

Both—but not necessarily in the way you might expect.

Sometimes support looks like finding a resource, getting a recommendation, or hearing how another parent navigated something similar. Other times, it’s having somewhere to say, “This is hard,” and finding people who understand why.

The community makes room for both the practical and the human parts of raising a neurodiverse child.

  • Is this therapy?

No. This community is not therapy, crisis intervention, or clinical treatment. It’s a place for parents to connect, share lived experience, exchange resources and ideas, and learn from one another.

  • What is The Elephant Path?

The Elephant Path™ is the framework that guides everything we create at The Small Elephant.

It is built on the belief that families need more than information—they need a way to make sense of what they're carrying, understand what matters now, and navigate what comes next.

Through three stages—See, Steady, and Strengthen—The Elephant Path helps parents move from feeling overlooked and overwhelmed toward greater understanding, clarity, and agency.

  • What is The Elephant Circle™?

The Elephant Circle™ is our free monthly virtual gathering for parents raising neurodiverse children—a place to connect, ask questions, share what’s happening, or simply listen.

It’s a chance to meet other parents, experience the kinds of conversations happening inside The Small Elephant, and get a look at the community, resources, and practical tools available when you’re ready for more.

No membership required. No formal diagnosis required. Attend for free and start with where you are.

  • Do I have to become a member after attending The Elephant Circle™?

    Not at all.

The Elephant Circle™ is free to attend, whether you come once or join us every month. There’s no expectation to become a member afterward.

If you decide you’d like more ongoing connection, resources, and access to the private community, you’ll know where to find us.

  • What if I’m not ready for a membership yet?

That’s completely fine. You don’t need to join the community to have a place here.

The Elephant Circle™ is free to attend each month, and you’re welcome to come once or return whenever it feels useful. Ask a question, connect with other parents, or simply listen.

If and when you want something more ongoing, the community will be there.

  • Can I cancel my membership?

Yes. You can cancel your membership at any time. There are no long-term contracts or commitments, and you’ll continue to have access through the end of your current billing period.

  • Who founded The Small Elephant?

The Small Elephant was founded by Gretchen Kelsey, a parent, entrepreneur, inventor, and systems thinker whose work grew from her own experience raising and advocating within a neurodiverse family.

Gretchen created The Elephant Path™ and invented the patent-pending Luma Timer™. Today, she serves as the founder and steward of The Small Elephant—building the tools, spaces, and connections that help families find what they need.

You can learn more about Gretchen and her work at gretchen-kelsey.com.

  • Why was The Small Elephant created?

The Small Elephant grew from lived experience navigating therapies, school systems, IEPs, diagnoses, sensory differences, emotional regulation, executive functioning challenges, and the everyday realities of raising a neurodiverse family.

Along the way, one thing became clear: families rarely need just one kind of support. They may need information, a practical tool, a helpful resource, or simply another parent who understands what they're navigating.

That experience helped shape The Elephant Path™ and, ultimately, The Small Elephant—a place designed to make support, tools, resources, and connection easier to find.

  • Can I talk with Gretchen one-on-one?

Yes. While The Small Elephant is primarily built around community, shared resources, practical tools, and connection, there may be times when a one-on-one conversation is helpful.

Gretchen offers limited consultations for parents who want a more personal conversation about what they're navigating, help making sense of their options, or clarity around possible next steps.

These conversations are not therapy, medical care, or clinical treatment. Sometimes it simply helps to talk things through with someone who understands the landscape.

  • Do you accept insurance?

No. The Small Elephant is not a medical, therapeutic, or clinical service, so we do not bill or accept insurance.

Memberships, consultations, events, and other offerings are paid directly when applicable.

  • Will HSA or FSA cards work?

HSA and FSA eligibility varies depending on the expense and your individual plan. Because The Small Elephant is not a medical or therapeutic provider, we cannot guarantee that memberships, consultations, products, or other offerings will qualify for reimbursement.

We recommend checking with your HSA/FSA administrator before making a purchase if you plan to use those funds.
